Windows NT 4.x: Setting up (Dial-Up Networking)

This short tutorial covers the setup of Remote Access Services (RAS) on Windows NT for use with your Internet zap PPP account. Before starting, please ensure that you have your Windows NT4 CD handy. Also, these instructions assume that you have already installed your modem from the Control Panel.


Setting Up RAS

  • My Computer
  • Control Panel
  • Network
  • Services
  • If Remote Access Service (RAS) is not installed, press Add and then double-click on Remote Access Service
    • If prompted to insert your NT4 CD, please do so and follow any instructions given...
    • RAS should now be in the list of installed services
  • Double click on Remote Access Service
  • If no modems are listed, press Add and then select your modem from the drop down list
  • Click once on your modem to select it
  • Configure
  • Select Dial Out only or Dial Out or Receive calls and press OK
  • Network
  • For outgoing calls, make sure that you have TCP/IP enabled, and then press OK
  • Continue
  • Close

At this point, you will probably be prompted to Restart your Computer. If so, select YES to reboot.


Creating A New Dial up Networking Connection ( DUN)

  • Log in
  • My Computer
  • Dial Up Networking
  • If there are no DUN connections, then press OK when prompted, otherwise press New to make a new connection..
  • In the Connection name, type "Internet ZAP"
  • Fill in the phone number information for your local Point of Presence
  • Server
  • Dial-Up Server Type should be PPP
  • TCP/IP enabled
  • IPX/SPX disabled
  • NetBEUI disabled
  • Enable software compression ON
  • Enable PPP LCP Extensions ON
  • TCP/IP Settings
  • Server assigned IP address
  • Specify Name Server addresses
    • Primary DNS: 154.6.115.10
    • Secondary DNS: 154.6.115.20
    • Primary WINS: 0.0.0.0
    • Secondary WINS: 0.0.0.0
  • Use IP header compression ON
  • Use default gateway on remote network ON
  • OK
  • Script: Set to None
  • Security: Set to Accept any authentication including clear text
  • X.25: Set to (none)
  • OK

Connecting to The Server

  • Dial
  • Enter your username in lowercase.( 5037username)
  • Enter your password (case sensitive)
  • Make sure the domain field is blank
  • OK
